Turkish foreign minister speaks about prospects of creating a defense alliance in the Caucasus
Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan may sign a document on joint defense with the states of the Caucasus, similar to the Mecca agreement.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said this on the "Editorial Desk" program of the Anadolu agency.
"Turkey occupies a similar strategic position with respect to the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Mediterranean basin, and Europe," Fidan said. In his opinion, by building such cooperation, Ankara is becoming the only NATO member with diplomatic influence in all parts of the world.
"For example, Azerbaijan and Armenia are moving toward the conclusion of a final peace agreement, and Ankara supports this process. In that case, prospects appear in the sphere of security and the economy. Over time, the need may also arise in the Caucasus to create a similar agreement, a defense alliance," the Turkish foreign minister emphasized.
On August 7, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan signed the Mecca agreement on joint defense, according to which an armed attack on any of the three countries is regarded as an act against all parties to the treaty.
