Azerbaijan sues CNN for spreading biased information
Azerbaijan has filed a lawsuit against the CNN television channel in a U.S. federal court.
According to Report, the reason for the lawsuit was the publication of an article containing unfounded and provocative claims directed against Azerbaijan.
The article, published by CNN on June 5, 2026, contained a number of provocative claims that Azerbaijan's territory had allegedly been used by Israel to conduct military and intelligence operations against Iran.
The article claims that Israeli special forces are allegedly operating in southern Azerbaijan, at several locations near the Iranian border, conducting intelligence operations and operations involving unmanned aerial vehicles from these points. It is also claimed that Israel had allegedly placed listening devices and other intelligence equipment in Azerbaijan in advance, and that this was aimed at preparing for subsequent operations against Iran.
It should be noted that CNN was aware of the Azerbaijani side's position even before the material was published. In response to CNN's inquiry, the Azerbaijani side officially denied these claims in advance and stated that the use of Azerbaijan's territory by any third state for military or intelligence purposes against Iran is not permitted.
However, despite the response received, Azerbaijan's position was not adequately reflected in the material, while the main claims were presented with reference to anonymous sources.
Despite repeated statements about the inadmissibility of the use of Azerbaijan's territory by foreign forces against neighboring and third countries, the deliberate publication by CNN of an article containing false claims caused justified dissatisfaction on the part of Azerbaijan.
After the material was published, the Azerbaijani side officially demanded that CNN retract the said claims and make corrections to the material. A corresponding statement on this matter was also made by the spokesperson of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On June 6, June 23, and July 2, the Azerbaijani side sent CNN repeated official letters demanding that the claims contained in the material be retracted and that appropriate corrections be made.
