In Britain, AI used in brain surgery for the first time in the world - PHOTO

Doctors in the United Kingdom have, for the first time in the world, used artificial intelligence (AI) in real time to assist a surgeon in removing a brain tumor.

This was reported in a release by University College London Hospitals.

According to the report, the operation took place at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Forty-eight-year-old Rhys Hibbert became the first patient to undergo surgery using AI. Without intervention, the tumor could have led to blindness.

During the operation, the AI analyzed the video image from the camera in real time, highlighting critical structures at the base of the brain, where nerves and blood vessels are located in close proximity. The system helped surgeons avoid dangerous zones while removing the tumor.

The system was developed by specialists from University College London with the support of the National Institute for Health Research and the company Google. The patient, who before the operation moved with a cane due to loss of vision, was able to walk on his own just a week after the intervention.
