The year’s final lunar eclipse comes to an end – UPDATED

The penumbral lunar eclipse ended at 11:01:41.

According to the Department of Astrophysics of the Faculty of Physics at Baku State University (BSU), the maximum phase of the eclipse occurred at 08:12:53, reports 1news.az.

It should be noted that the astronomical event was visible in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

In Azerbaijan, the penumbral lunar eclipse was only partially visible—from 05:23 to 05:55 AM, up until moonset.

The last eclipse of this year began in August.

This was reported by the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory named after N. Tusi.

It is noted that this is a partial lunar eclipse, that is, the Earth's shadow will not completely cover the Moon. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon does not fall exactly at the point of intersection of its orbit with the Earth's orbit. The plane of the Moon's orbit forms an angle of only 5° with the plane of the Earth's orbit. Since this angle is small, the Moon does not pass exactly through the line between the Earth and the Sun every month. Therefore, eclipses do not occur monthly, but only with the corresponding configuration of the Moon, the Earth, and the Sun — when they are on the same line or with a slight deviation. A lunar eclipse is possible only during the full moon phase.

The eclipse began at 05:23 and will end at 11:01. The natural phenomenon is not observed in Europe, Africa, North and South America, as well as over the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. In Azerbaijan, dawn comes as early as 05:35. Although the Moon will be above the horizon, it will become light just 12 minutes after the beginning of the eclipse. This period falls on the penumbral phase of the eclipse. A penumbral lunar eclipse is difficult to distinguish with the naked eye — it is felt only as an insignificant decrease in the brightness of the Moon.

Let us recall that none of the three previous eclipses of 2026 — two solar and one lunar — were observed from the territory of Azerbaijan.

Let us note that in 2027 a total of five eclipses will occur: two solar and three lunar. Of these, the penumbral lunar eclipse on February 21 and the total solar eclipse on August 2 will be observable from the territory of Azerbaijan. However, during the solar eclipse, Azerbaijan will not fall within the band of total shadow, so on the territory of the country it will be observed as a partial solar eclipse.
