Mirzoyan: Moscow is ready to discuss the restoration of railways to the borders of Turkey and Azerbaijan

Russia has expressed its readiness to discuss the details of restoring railway sections in Armenia leading to the borders of Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said this in an interview with Public Television.

"Literally two or three days ago I received signals that they (representatives of the Russian Federation - ed.) are ready to discuss the nuances: who should invest and how much, and so on," the minister said.

At the same time, Mirzoyan emphasized that much will depend on the conditions for implementing the project. According to him, the issue has yet to be considered by the relevant agencies.

Let us recall that in February 2008 Armenia's railway infrastructure was transferred to the concession management of the South Caucasus Railway for 30 years with the right to extend it for another 10 years.

The topic of revising the current Russian concession arose against the backdrop of Armenia's plans to restore railway sections on the borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey. In May, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the Armenian government is ready to carry out their reconstruction at its own expense.

Pashinyan proposed that Moscow consider the possibility of transferring the concession to a friendly third country, however, Russian Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin later stated that this issue is not being discussed.
