Kos urges EU candidates to distance themselves from MAGA
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that countries that are candidates for accession to the European Union should distance themselves from the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement of U.S. President Donald Trump.
As Euractiv writes, she said this at an event organized by the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels.
Kos emphasized that candidate countries must be cautious and avoid becoming dependent on representatives of the MAGA movement.
"We should not risk our future members becoming dependent on others, which runs counter to our long-term interests," she said.
According to the European commissioner, for the first time in the history of the EU enlargement process, "opponents have appeared." Asked whom she considers the European Union's "opponents," Kos replied that Russia is among them.
She also said that the EU has faced pressure from MAGA ideologues, who are trying to convince Europeans that European civilization and the economy are in decline and that there is no real democracy in Europe.
Kos's statements came against the backdrop of the Trump administration's attempts to strengthen political and economic ties with the countries of the Western Balkans.
