Uzbekistan's Senate approves changes to the law on the Uzbek Latin-based alphabet

At a plenary session on Thursday, Uzbekistan's Senate approved amendments to the law "On the Introduction of the Uzbek Alphabet Based on Latin Script"; the alphabet will consist of 28 letters and one apostrophe instead of the current 26 letters and three letter combinations, the press service of the upper house of parliament reported.

The law also stipulates that, until the amendments take effect, the use of documents, national currency, and securities drawn up on the basis of the current alphabet is permitted.

Symbolic emblems of state bodies and organizations, as well as signs and signboards produced using the current alphabet, may be used until they become unusable or until the established period expires.
According to the senators' assessment, the adoption of the law will contribute to improving the Uzbek alphabet based on Latin script and the rules of orthography, expanding the opportunities for using the state language, and developing the digitalization processes of the Uzbek language.
The Legislative Chamber (lower house) of parliament passed the law providing for a reform of the Uzbek Latin alphabet in July of this year.
The law "On the Introduction of the Uzbek Alphabet Based on Latin Script" was adopted on September 2, 1993.
