Trump promises to lift the 15% tariff on Irish whiskey

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday at the conclusion of a golf tournament in Ireland that he intends to lift the 15% tariff on Irish whiskey.

During the Irish Open trophy presentation ceremony, Trump said that literally everyone had asked him about it, including some golfers.

"Everybody's badgering me to do it," the Republican president said. "And I said, 'On behalf of the United States of America, I'm going to take the tariffs off Irish whiskey.'"

Irish whiskey is currently subject to a 15% tariff imposed by Trump on imports from the European Union. In May, Trump announced that he was lifting some tariffs on whisky from the United Kingdom, including Scotch and alcohol produced in Northern Ireland.

Trump's seemingly unexpected announcement at the end of the tournament was accompanied by loud whistling and applause from spectators.

In May, the Irish Whiskey Association called for the tariffs to be lifted, saying the move would help many American companies that carry Irish products in their portfolios and would relieve consumers of uncertainty.

There are no details yet on exactly when the tariff will be lifted.

On April 30, Trump said he had granted the United Kingdom a tariff exemption on whisky following a visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the White House. "The King and Queen got me to do what nobody else has been able to accomplish, practically without even asking!" Trump wrote on social media.

The Scotch Whisky Association reported on July 24 that the zero-tariff policy had taken effect.
