Birmingham is headed by a Muslim mayor for the first time

The second most populous city in the United Kingdom after London — Birmingham — is headed by a Muslim mayor for the first time in its history.

The new head of the city is Zaker Choudhry, a native of Pakistan. Information about this has been published on the official website of the Birmingham City Council.

As Geo News reports, during the ceremony of Choudhry taking office in the city council building, a Muslim chaplain was present who read a prayer for the well-being and successful work of the new mayor.

Over the past decades, the demographic situation in Birmingham has changed significantly against the backdrop of large-scale immigration. Currently, a significant portion of the city's population consists of people from South Asian countries, as well as representatives of the Muslim community.

The capital of the United Kingdom — London — is also headed by a Muslim mayor of Pakistani origin, Sadiq Khan. He has held this post since 2016.

Previously, a Muslim, Zohran Mamdani, was elected mayor of New York.
