Trump calls de la Espriella winner in Colombian presidential election

American leader Donald Trump stated that he considers far-right politician and businessman Abelardo de la Espriella the winner of the presidential elections in Colombia.

"He won by a large margin," the U.S. president wrote on June 21 in Truth Social. He posted a link to a publication in his message that says de la Espriella won.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier wrote on X: "I just spoke with the president-elect of Colombia Abelardo de la Espriella, congratulated him on his victory in the elections. The Trump administration looks forward to close interaction with your future administration in order to strengthen security cooperation in the region, stop illegal migration to the U.S. and strengthen economic ties."

Trump had previously congratulated de la Espriella on his victory in the first round of voting. This caused a protest from the current president of Colombia Gustavo Petro, who regarded the statement by the head of the Washington administration as gross interference in the elections.

According to the latest official data, after processing ballots from 99.97% of polling stations, Abelardo de la Espriella is gaining 49.66% of the votes (12,956,941 voters supported him). His rival Ivan Cepeda Castro receives 48.70% (12,707,117 votes).
