Head of Saudi Arabia football federation resigns after 2026 World Cup failure

Saudi Arabia Football Federation head Yasser Al-Mishal announced his resignation on social media after the national team's unsuccessful performance at the 2026 World Cup.

"I am leaving my post, but I will continue to serve my homeland and support everything that contributes to the development and successes of Saudi sports. I thank everyone who supported us on this path, as well as our fans. I apologize if we did not meet your expectations," Al-Mishal wrote.

The Saudi Arabian national team drew with Uruguay (1:1) and Cape Verde (0:0) and lost to Spain (0:4). The team earned two points in the group stage and did not advance to the playoffs.

The World Cup started on June 11 and will run until July 19 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The defending champion is the Argentina national team, which defeated the France team in the 2022 final.
