Neymar announces completion of performances for the national team

Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer Neymar has announced his retirement from the national team.

His comments were reported by the Globo portal.

Neymar scored for the Brazil national team for the first time since 2023, converting a penalty in the round of 16 match at the 2026 World Cup against Norway (1:2).

"I tried, but now it's all over," Neymar said.

Neymar is 34 years old. In January 2025 he transferred to Brazilian club Santos, having previously played for Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia. Before moving to Al-Hilal, Neymar played for French club PSG. For his transfer the Parisian club paid Spanish club Barcelona a world-record €222 million in 2017.

With PSG the player became a five-time French champion, four-time winner of the country's super cup, three-time winner of the French Cup and two-time winner of the League Cup.

During his career Neymar also played for Barcelona. The player twice won the Spanish championship, three times the country's cup, and once each the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Neymar's first club was Santos, with whom the player won the Brazilian Cup and the Copa Libertadores.

Neymar is the all-time leading scorer for the Brazil national team. He scored 80 goals for the team in 130 matches.

With the Brazil national team the player won the Olympics (2016), earned silver medals at the Games (2012) and Copa America (2021), and won the Confederations Cup (2013). At the 2026 World Cup he played for the Brazil national team for the first time since October 2023.
