The match-worn jersey of former Brazil national team striker Pele from the 1958 World Cup final match was sold for $4.88 million.
This is reported by the official website of the auction house Sotheby’s. In the 1958 World Cup final, Brazil defeated Sweden 5-2, and 17-year-old Pele scored two goals.
The bidding started on June 29 and lasted until July 16. The most expensive soccer jersey to date remains the one belonging to Argentine football legend Diego Maradona. In 2022, it was sold at auction for $9.28 million. The Argentine wore it at the 1986 World Cup, which was victorious for his team.
