Heat in Europe claimed over 200,000 lives over the past four years

More than 200,000 people died from heat in the European region over the past 4 years, said Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe.

«Only over the past four years — in the period from 2022 to 2025 — more than 200,000 people died from heat in the WHO European region, and over the past two decades, heat-related mortality has increased by 30%. These are not forecasts. This is happening right now», the expert said. He also noted that recently presented WHO data that this summer the region has already recorded more than 10,000 cases of excess mortality from record heat relate to only five countries in the region.

The European region is one of the six WHO regions. It unites 53 states of Europe and Central Asia, including Russia, Turkey, the countries of the Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
