Ankara accuses Athens of systematically restricting rights of Turkish minority
Turkey strongly condemned Greece's decision to close eight more primary schools belonging to the Turkish minority of Western Thrace.
As Report reports, this was stated by the official representative of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oncu Keceli, in a post on his X social media page.
According to him, after Greece adopted this decision, justified by the small number of students, the number of primary schools of the Turkish minority decreased to 76. Keceli also noted that new obstacles were created during admission to the first grade of Turkish primary school No. 1 in Xanthi, calling it another example of systematic restriction of the right to education of the Turkish minority of Western Thrace.
The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that such decisions and actions constitute a violation of the provisions of the Lausanne Peace Treaty. According to him, Greece is evading the implementation of decisions of international judicial instances stating violations of the rights of the Turkish minority of Western Thrace, as well as recommendations of leading European institutions. Keceli called on Athens to act in accordance with its international obligations in the field of protection of minority rights and fundamental human rights, adding that Turkey will continue to resolutely support the protection of the rights and interests of its compatriots.
