Rubio: several countries have pledged to invest in US to protect Hormuz

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that a number of Persian Gulf countries have pledged to invest in the United States in exchange for Washington ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

"The United States will continue to do everything necessary to protect international shipping, but other countries need to step up and provide either resources or finances to help with this burden. It is not the job of the United States to forever protect shipping for the entire planet. Commitments have already been made for some such investments, and there are others that will make commitments in the future," he told reporters.

The head of the US foreign policy agency added that countries in the region "need to be able to make a profit in order to make such investments, and they will not be able to do so if their oil and gas do not reach the market."

Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said that his country wants to control the Strait of Hormuz, receiving 20% of the value of transported cargo as compensation for ensuring safe navigation. Later, he reported on Truth Social that he had abandoned the idea of Washington receiving compensation for the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz in favor of trade and investment deals with Persian Gulf states.
