King Charles III accepts Starmer's resignation as British prime minister

Keir Starmer resigned as prime minister of the United Kingdom during an audience with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

Royal press service reported this.

"The Right Honorable Member of Parliament Sir Keir Starmer had an audience with the king this morning and submitted his resignation as prime minister and first lord of the treasury, which His Majesty graciously accepted," the statement said.

On June 22, Starmer announced his intention to step down as leader of the Labour Party and prime minister of the United Kingdom.

A political crisis erupted in the United Kingdom after local government elections held on May 7. As a result, the Labour Party lost control of the Welsh Parliament for the first time. Labour elected 1,400 fewer representatives to various legislative bodies in England than it had previously.

The new prime minister will be former mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, who will meet with Charles III in the coming minutes to receive a mandate to form a government.
