Hamas elects Khalil al-Hayya as new leader of the movement
The leader of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas, Khalil al-Hayya, has been elected as the new head of the movement's political bureau.
This is stated in a Hamas statement published on the official Telegram channel.
"Hamas announces the election of Khalil al-Hayya as head of the movement's political bureau," the text says. On July 18, the Al Hadath channel, citing sources, reported that Hamas held a vote to elect a new head of the political bureau.
The leadership position in Hamas remained vacant after the killing of Yahya Sinwar in October 2024 as a result of an Israeli strike on a residential building in the city of Rafah in the south of the Palestinian enclave. Sinwar replaced Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed as a result of an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran in July 2024. After Sinwar's death, the functions of the head of the political bureau are actually performed by the governing council.
