New York mayor Mamdani admits he will not be able to arrest Netanyahu under ICC warrant

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani admitted that the city lacks the powers that would allow it to detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

"It is quite obvious that we do not have our own legal authority to execute this warrant [of the International Criminal Court]. Nevertheless, the federal government has such powers, and I urge it to join the ICC and execute this warrant," Mamdani said in a video published on X.

Earlier, the mayor of New York stated that the city's legal department was studying the possibilities for arresting Netanyahu under the ICC warrant in case of his visit to participate in the high-level week of the UN General Assembly in September. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized that no one and in no form would be able to detain Netanyahu during his trips to the United States.

In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Israel and the United States do not recognize the court's jurisdiction.
