Death toll from floods in northeastern India reaches 78

The death toll from the floods in the state of Assam in northeastern India has reached 78.

This was reported to journalists by the state's emergency management department.

According to the agency, more than 300,000 residents remain in the disaster zone. A total of 551 settlements have been flooded. The most difficult situation persists in the Charaideo district, where more than 137,000 people have been affected by the disaster.

The floods have damaged roads, homes, schools, and other infrastructure. According to the authorities, more than 11,000 head of livestock died as a result of the disaster.

India's Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah discussed the situation in Assam with the state's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sarma noted that the water level in the flood-affected areas is gradually declining, but many residents still cannot return home because of the destruction.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of the possibility of new downpours in Assam over the next two days.
