U.S. military asked to come up with 'creative' ideas to punish Iran
The U.S. military has been asked to come up with "creative and unconventional" ideas to punish Iran, CNN reports, citing sources.
"We need ideas. We are looking for new, creative and unconventional ways to put pressure on Iran and punish it," an officer of the intelligence unit of U.S. Central Command wrote in a message sent out on Wednesday to a wide group of military analysts.
A second source also said that a high-ranking American military officer sent out this message last week, requesting new ideas on how to engage with Iran.
According to military officials, this unusual request is one of the signs of the limited and potentially unacceptable options available to U.S. President Donald Trump to force Iran to make a deal on his terms. Therefore, in the hope of finding an alternative, a CENTCOM representative launched a brainstorming session by email to find out whether anyone had a better idea.
Earlier, Trump said that the United States and Iran would move to negotiations on the afternoon of August 3. The American leader also announced the cancellation of a powerful strike being prepared against Iran.
