Tbilisi mayor: Georgia and Ukraine were deceived with promises of NATO membership

NATO's leadership deceived both Georgia and Ukraine for many years by promising to admit them into the alliance, while in reality it did not plan to do so.

This was stated to journalists by the secretary general of the ruling party "Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia," Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.

"Throughout all these years, countries such as Georgia and Ukraine were deceived that NATO's doors were open, but in reality we all understand what a situation has developed. They themselves are no longer embarrassed, they openly make statements of the kind that this is practically impossible and ruled out," Kaladze said.

The deputy head of the Georgian parliament's committee on European integration, Tornike Pagava, in turn stated that if NATO ultimately refuses to admit the republic into its ranks, Tbilisi will have to pursue a multi-vector policy.

"NATO member states, including France and Britain, themselves say that NATO does not plan to expand to the East. In the event that NATO itself is not ready for all this, we will have to pursue a multi-vector policy," Pagava told journalists.
