France legalizes euthanasia for incurable illnesses
French President Emmanuel Macron has signed a law legalizing euthanasia in the country, according to the text of the document published in the official gazette Journal Officiel.
In mid-July, the initiative was approved by the French parliament, after which the country's constitutional council on August 14 recognized the law as consistent with the French constitution.
The law provides for granting the right to euthanasia in France to people who are in the advanced or terminal stage of a serious and incurable illness that threatens their life. The procedure will become possible if a person experiences suffering from the illness that does not respond to therapy or becomes unbearable if treatment is discontinued. Those able to request assistance in ending their lives will be persons over 18 years of age who hold French citizenship or legally reside in the country on a permanent basis.
