Roberto Carlos denies rumors about converting to Islam
Former Brazil national team and Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos has commented for the first time on rumors that he converted to Islam after his wedding to Moroccan national Souheila al-Tahiri.
Earlier, Turkish media reported that the 53-year-old Brazilian had allegedly recited the shahada (the phrase signifying conversion to the Muslim religion) during a meeting with Sheikh Jihad Hamada in Sao Paulo. This information spread after a post by Turkish lawmaker Ali Sahin, who cited the sheikh's words.
However, Carlos himself called the information untrue.
"I have deep respect for Islam. I am glad to see my wife pray, but the rumors about my conversion to Islam do not correspond to reality," the former soccer player told the newspaper Okaz.
Carlos also explained that various ceremonies were held at the wedding — taking into account the Catholic traditions of his family members and the religious beliefs of his wife and her friends.
