Rubinyan: We are being pushed toward the EU by our own EAEU colleagues
It is known that it is precisely our colleagues in the EAEU who are pushing us toward rapprochement with the European Union.
Speaker of Armenia's parliament Ruben Rubinyan said this in a conversation with journalists on August 26, responding to criticism from the Chairman of Russia's State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin.
According to him, they constantly say that Armenia should hold a referendum, but this is possible only if, among other things, the question is formulated.
He explained that it is impossible to simply hold a referendum if the accompanying steps have not been taken.
"A referendum can be held only in the event of an application for EU membership, receiving a positive response, and certainty regarding the timeframes. In the absence of the aforementioned circumstances, it is impossible to hold a referendum now," Rubinyan added.
He assured that the Armenian authorities have always been sincere. "It is not we who are taking steps aimed at worsening relations with Russia. On the contrary, we have done and continue to do everything so that we have normal, friendly relations," the Speaker of Armenia's parliament emphasized.
In this context, he called the restrictions on Armenian economic entities unfair and disproportionate, as they correspond neither to the spirit of Armenian-Russian relations, nor, all the more, to the rules of the EAEU.
"The whole point of the EAEU is the free and duty-free movement of goods. In this case, de facto, there is no such freedom," the parliamentarian concluded.
