Security Council secretary: The results of a referendum on Armenia's accession to the EU would upset Russia

If a referendum on Armenia's membership in the EU or the EAEU were held in the near future, Russia would be very upset by how Armenia's population would react.

This was stated by the secretary of Armenia's Security Council, Alen Simonyan, on the television channel Dozhd.

“Even those people who did not vote for our party are very offended by Russia's position during the 2020 war and the subsequent events, by the statements of various journalists, public and state figures, and by the statements of the Belarusian authorities,” Simonyan noted.

At the same time, he explained that Armenia will make its own choice.

“We will make our choice when this question becomes real. Right now there are no concrete steps toward joining the European Union. We do not want to and do not intend to leave the EAEU,” Simonyan emphasized.

He assured that the appeal to Russia to transfer the management of the railways to a third party is not a political step.

“We are asking the Russian side to show flexibility so that these railways start working, because the current logic fits the saying: ‘A dog in the manger.’ If it is not possible to find a way out of the situation, then Armenia may go to court, since the functioning of the railway is a matter of national security,” Simonyan concluded.
