In France, a car drove into a crowd, there are fatalities

On the evening of August 26, a car drove into a crowd across from the railway station in the city of Caen; two people were killed and 10 more were injured.

This was reported by the Reuters agency, citing local authorities.

It is noted that seven of the 10 injured are in serious condition.

As Reuters writes, citing the authorities, the driver acted deliberately and has already been detained.

As the prefect of Calvados, David Clavière, noted, the suspect in the incident was not on the radar of the special services, but is known to police in connection with traffic violations. A criminal case has been opened, and investigators are examining surveillance camera footage. The Caen prosecutor's office specified that the detainee is 26 years old.

"At this point, it appears that there is no terrorist motive, but the investigation has only just begun," the radio station quoted the city's deputy prosecutor as saying.
