King Harald V of Norway to be buried at Akershus Fortress

The funeral of King Harald V of Norway, who died in his 89th year, will take place on September 5.

After the official ceremony, the monarch will be laid to rest in a new sarcophagus at Akershus Fortress in Oslo. The appearance of the sarcophagus is being kept secret and will be revealed only after the burial. In the future, Queen Sonja will rest in the same tomb.

The design of the new sarcophagus was entrusted to the architectural firm Snøhetta and Professor Kjetil Trædal Thorsen; the Norwegian government had previously allocated 20 million kroner for its creation. About 3,000 servicemen are involved in organizing the funeral events under the leadership of the commandant of Akershus Fortress, Brigadier General Gyda Ellefsplass Olssen.

On the day of the monarch's death, a mourning 21-gun artillery salute was fired at Akershus Fortress from guns purchased from Sweden before the dissolution of the union in 1905.
