Hurricane Karina strengthens to Category 1 in the Pacific Ocean
Tropical Storm Karina has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean. Forecasters predict it will continue to intensify in the coming days.
As 1news.az reports, this was announced by the Associated Press, citing data from the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
According to the center, maximum sustained wind speeds have reached 130 km/h, which corresponds to Category 1 on the hurricane scale. A major hurricane is considered to be a cyclone of Category 3 or higher.
Karina's center is currently located about 1,325 km southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. The hurricane is moving northwest at a speed of 24 km/h.
According to forecasters, the cyclone is far from land and poses no direct threat to the coast. At the same time, the waves it generates could lead to increased surf and rip currents along the shores of southwestern Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
