Nepal's authorities begin temporarily burying unidentified flood victims

In Nepal, unidentified flood victims have begun to be buried in mass graves.

For many relatives of the dead and missing, such burials — carried out without their consent and without the necessary rites — have caused outrage. The authorities explain the haste by the large number of victims and fears that infections will begin to spread because of the large number of decomposing bodies.

Before burial, DNA samples are taken from the dead — the authorities announced that later the families of the deceased will be allowed to exhume the remains and perform the necessary rituals. In Nepal, where Hinduism is widespread, the dead are traditionally cremated.
