Trump signs government funding bill through December 11

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a short-term government funding bill, averting a possible shutdown.

"On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the president signed (...) the 'Continuing Appropriations and Extension of Funding Act, 2027,' which includes a short-term continuing resolution providing funding for federal agencies for fiscal year 2027 through December 11, 2026," the White House reported.

A day earlier, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill with 370 votes in favor, while 48 lawmakers voted against.

The bill provides funding for federal agencies at current levels through December 11.

Lawmakers feared a repeat of last year's situation ahead of the midterm congressional elections.

Last fall saw a record-long 43-day government shutdown. It was followed by a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, which lasted 76 days.

The fiscal year in the United States runs from October 1 to September 30 and is directly tied to the budget cycle.

The U.S. midterm congressional elections are scheduled for November 3, 2026.
