French Foreign Ministry sees no need to react to Trump's post about its territories

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not consider it necessary to react to every publication by U.S. President Donald Trump.

This was stated by Benjamin Haddad, Minister Delegate for European Affairs at the French Foreign Ministry, commenting on the White House's publication of a map on which the republic's overseas territories are colored in the colors of the American flag.

Speaking on the radio station Sud Radio, Haddad called the U.S. administration's claims a "whim." "If we started reacting to every tweet from the White House and Donald Trump, we would have no time left for work," he said. "I believe that one should not comment too much and overreact to each of his whims."

As the Minister Delegate assured, Paris is committed to its overseas territories. He recalled that in the situation surrounding Greenland's sovereignty, EU countries applied, among other things, the "anti-coercion instrument," which makes it possible to "strike at American digital companies."

On September 7, U.S. President Donald Trump published a map on the social network Truth Social on which Canada, Mexico and a number of countries of Central America and the Caribbean, including Cuba and a number of France's overseas territories, as well as Greenland, are colored in the colors of the American flag. Trump refrained from any comments. The American leader has repeatedly speculated in the past about the possibility of Canada and Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, joining the United States.
