Georgia pledges to abide by new U.S. sanctions against Iranian airlines

The Georgian authorities will comply with the international sanctions imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department on Iranian airlines.

This was stated in a statement by the Civil Aviation Agency of Georgia's Ministry of Economy.

Earlier, the United States added 35 legal entities, as well as one Egyptian citizen, to its Iran sanctions list. The restrictions were imposed on 35 airlines and other companies operating in the air transportation sector. According to the departure board of Tbilisi International Airport, the airlines Qeshm and Varesh continue to operate regular flights from Iran to Tbilisi.

"Since the expanded sanctions list published by the U.S. Department of the Treasury covers airlines that currently operate air service between Georgia and Iran, the Georgian side, as in other cases, will now also act in accordance with the international sanctions regime," the statement says.

The Civil Aviation Agency also specified that when granting foreign airlines permission to fly to Georgia, the republic's aviation authorities are guided by national legislation, ICAO standards, and bilateral and multilateral agreements. Georgia takes into account the sanctions mechanisms of the European Union and the United States.
