Protests in Syria: details

Protests have begun in several Syrian provinces after the authorities decided to raise prices for petroleum products. Participants in the demonstrations blocked several highways, including the M-5 international highway.

Syria TV reports protests in the cities of Aleppo, Idlib, Hasakah, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor. The channel is publishing footage of large fires: protesters are blocking roads and setting tires ablaze. In some cities, participants in the demonstrations are also preventing tanker trucks from passing.

In Syria, fuel prices are set by a special committee under the Ministry of Energy. On September 12, the committee raised prices for gasoline, gas, and diesel fuel. As a result, fuel became 25–40% more expensive.
