Thirty-three cases of intestinal infection have been identified among visitors to one of the cafes in Kazan, the press service of the Rospotrebnadzor Directorate for Tatarstan told Interfax.

"Between September 12 and 13, 2026, 33 cases of intestinal infection were registered after consuming products from NAN Kebab N1 in Kazan," the statement says.

It is specified that salmonella was detected in 22 of those who fell ill.

"All those who fell ill consumed shawarma, closed pizza, and kebab on September 9-11," the information notes.

The Rospotrebnadzor Directorate for the republic conducted an investigation and identified numerous violations (unsatisfactory sanitary, technical, and hygienic conditions, absence of documents for the products, lack of hot water, failure to observe production flow requirements and the dishwashing regime, expired products). Twenty batches of products weighing 44 kg were withdrawn from sale. The facility has been sealed, and the materials have been forwarded to court.

"Based on the results of laboratory tests, E. coli was found in three swabs and five products (cut and prepared tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, Chinese cabbage, and cheese), and salmonella was also found in garlic sauce and the signature shawarma sauce. Salmonella was also isolated from the cook (the shawarma maker)," the statement says.

A criminal case has been opened over the improper provision of services (Part 1 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), the necessary examinations are being ordered, and witnesses are being questioned, the Investigative Committee's directorate for Tatarstan reported on Monday.
