Former FIDE vice president Georgios Makropoulos dies
Former vice president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Georgios Makropoulos has died at the age of 72, the press service of the European Chess Union reported on the social network X.
The cause of death was not specified.
"For decades, Georgios Makropoulos was one of the most influential figures in FIDE and international chess: a respected chess administrator and outstanding organizer who devoted his life to the development of our sport," the statement said.
Makropoulos was a vice president of FIDE, as well as the organization's general secretary. In 2018, he ran for the post of FIDE president, but Russian Arkady Dvorkovich was elected to the position at that time.
From 1982 to 2021, Makropoulos headed the Greek Chess Federation.
