Japan's government resigns ahead of reshuffle

Japan's government has resigned in full ahead of a cabinet reshuffle to be carried out by the head of government, Sanae Takaichi.

At an emergency cabinet meeting, all of its members submitted the relevant resignation letters, which the prime minister accepted, her office reported.

The new composition of the cabinet of ministers is to be announced in the coming hours. The ministers who have resigned will formally carry out their duties until a new cabinet is formed. All key ministers are expected to retain their posts in it, including Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, as well as Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara.

The day before, Sanae Takaichi had already carried out a minor reshuffle in the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), leaving key posts unchanged. Local observers attribute the minimal changes in the reshuffles of the LDP leadership and the government to Takaichi's desire to ensure stability in the party's management and to create favorable conditions for her own reelection as party chairperson in 2027.
