Largest crater in the solar system discovered on the Moon
The American space agency NASA has discovered the largest new crater in the solar system on the Moon.
This was reported in the scientific journal Science Advances.
The crater was found with the help of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter interplanetary station in 2025. The publication states that this is the largest of the modern impact craters discovered in the solar system; according to existing models, such events occur once every 132 years.
As specified on NASA's website, in the spring of 2024 an asteroid or comet the size of a three- to six-story building crashed into the surface of Earth's satellite. The crater's diameter is 222 meters, and its depth is about 42 meters. The crater was named McGetchin in honor of the scientist Thomas McGetchin.
