Lavrov: Moscow ready to play its role in resolving issue of Iranian enriched uranium stockpiles

Moscow expresses its readiness to contribute to resolving the issue concerning Iranian stockpiles of enriched uranium.

This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to journalists following an official visit to China.

"Russia, as it did during the agreement of that program in 2015, is ready to play its role in resolving the issue of enriched uranium. This role can take various forms, including the processing of highly enriched uranium to fuel grade, the transfer of a certain amount for storage in Russia - everything that will be acceptable to Iran without violating its inalienable right to uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes," the minister said.

Lavrov noted that Russia, within the framework of modern history, was part of the process that ultimately led to the agreement on guarantees and the settlement of the Iranian nuclear program. "It’s all in the same Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on this matter. In this comprehensive plan and the resolution that endorsed it, there is everything necessary to alleviate any concerns that Iran might someday start producing nuclear weapons. This plan includes everything to ensure reliable control - preventing the Iranian nuclear program from shifting to military tracks," he added.

"The fact that the United States destroyed this program, something Israel always wanted, and that this happened back in 2019, is a sad fact of modern world history. Now, the only hope is that something similar can be recreated from the ruins of that very significant multilateral diplomatic agreement," the minister pointed out.
