Spain will not participate in military operation in the Strait of Hormuz

Spain has no intention of participating in any military operations in the Strait of Hormuz.

This was stated by the country's Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares.

In his view, "Hormuz must once again become a strait with free, safe, and cost-free transit for any vessel from any country, without discrimination." "We will not take part in any military operation in Hormuz," the diplomat assured in an interview with RNE radio station.

The minister reiterated his support for suspending the EU's association agreement with Israel. "The European Union can only engage with other countries that recognize themselves as democracies based on respect for human rights," Albares added.

The United States and Israel launched a large-scale operation against Iran on February 28. On April 7, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a two-week mutual ceasefire with the Islamic Republic. On April 11, the two countries held several rounds of talks in Islamabad. As later reported in Tehran and Washington, the parties failed to reach an agreement on long-term conflict resolution due to a number of disagreements. It remains unclear whether a new round of consultations will take place. The U.S. began a naval blockade of Iran on April 13.
