France acknowledges billion-dollar losses from Middle East war

France has lost between €4 and €6 billion during the current war in the Middle East.

Such an estimate was provided by the country's Minister of Economy, Roland Lescure, during a broadcast on the RTL channel.

'This is the order of magnitude of the costs at this stage of the crisis, as we can assess them, including an impact of €3.6 billion on the cost of borrowed capital, which is rising due to increasing interest rates,' clarified the head of France's Ministry of Economy.

The interview took place ahead of a meeting of the state finance committee in Bercy, where, according to French media, a decision on additional cost-saving measures may be made in connection with the economic consequences of the Middle East conflict.

'We are not planning to cancel anything, but we may have to take precautionary measures; technically, this is called freezing. We freeze expenses that we can later unfreeze if the situation improves,' explained Lescure.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz was a mistake on both sides—both Iranian and American. He emphasized that the conflict must be resolved diplomatically. According to him, all participants in the hostilities 'need to calm down.'
