FIFA may punish Argentina national team over political banner
Argentina's national team may face punishment from FIFA for a political action after the 2026 World Cup semifinal match against England.
BBC reports this.
Players celebrated the victory with a banner "Malvinas Islands are Argentina," which violates regulations prohibiting political statements on the field. The federation may initiate disciplinary proceedings and fine the Argentine team.
The Malvinas (Falkland) Islands are a disputed territory between Argentina and the United Kingdom. In 1982, an armed conflict occurred between the countries, which Argentina lost. In 2013, residents of the islands voted for the status of an overseas territory of the United Kingdom (99.8%).
In the semifinal match, Argentina defeated England 2-1.
