Number of Ebola fever victims in DR Congo exceeds 860

Authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported an increase to 864 people in the number of those who died as a result of infection with the Ebola virus.

This is reported by the EFE news agency.

According to the authorities, 2,181 cases of infection have been confirmed, 722 patients have been hospitalized, and 412 people have recovered. The mortality rate is currently 39.6%.

The epidemic has currently affected the eastern Congolese provinces of Ituri (the epicenter of the epidemic), North and South Kivu, Upper Uele, and Chopo.

"Response teams are expanding epidemiological surveillance, early diagnosis, patient care, and contact tracing to contain the spread of the disease," the Congolese authorities said in a statement.

Ituri province continues to lead in the number of infections.

In neighboring Uganda, where the epidemic had previously spread, the last Ebola patient was discharged on Thursday. A total of 20 confirmed cases were registered in this country, and two patients died.

The Ebola epidemic was officially declared on May 15 in the Congolese province of Ituri, which borders Uganda and South Sudan. It then spread to other Congolese provinces as well as to Uganda.
