More than 140,000 people evacuated in France due to wildfires

The number of people evacuated due to a rapidly spreading fire in southwestern France has exceeded 141 thousand; military personnel have been brought in to assist fire services, said the country's prime minister Sébastien Lecornu.
"The fires that have struck our country have reached an unprecedented level. More than 141 thousand people have already been evacuated in the southwestern departments of Gironde and Landes to ensure their safety," the prime minister wrote on the social network X.

According to him, since Saturday evening about 500 military personnel have been deployed on site to help firefighters, and their number should increase to 1,000 on Saturday.

Medical services of the armed forces have also been mobilized. About 1.5 million FFP2 protective masks will be sent to the affected areas.
The day before, the head of the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs Laurent Nuñez stated that the area burned by natural fires has exceeded 50 thousand hectares since the beginning of the year. Two major fires in the departments of Gironde and Landes in the southwest of the country present particular difficulty.
Forests in France are engulfed in flames amid abnormal heat. As President Emmanuel Macron stated, the country has faced a record number of natural fires this summer for the entire period after the end of World War II.
