Lula da Silva: US tariffs are a strategic mistake by Washington

The introduction by the White House of new tariffs on Brazilian products has become a strategic mistake by the US.

This was stated by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in an article for The Washington Post newspaper.

According to the Brazilian leader, the new duties are unfair and harm the US economy and the partnership between the two countries. Lula da Silva emphasized that in the first half of 2026, bilateral trade decreased by 12.8%. Brazil's exports to the US fell to the lowest level since 1997. The president noted that Brazilian companies will begin replacing American suppliers with partners from other countries.

In mid-July, the US administration imposed 25-percent duties on most goods imported from Brazil.
