In Ottawa, giant Canadian flag hung in response to new US duties

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe ordered a giant Canadian flag to be hung at city hall in response to new US duties on Canadian products.

"Given the new [American] punitive duties recently imposed on many businesses in Ottawa and across Canada, I believe it is more important than ever to show that our city and our country are strong and united," the mayor explained on X. Sutcliffe called on his compatriots to continue "proudly displaying the maple leaf (depicted on the Canadian flag - TASS note) and to work together to build a stronger, more resilient and independent economy."

On July 21, US President Donald Trump imposed additional import duties of 50% on Canadian products in response to Canada's actions regarding American goods. The duties will not apply to energy resources, potash, seafood and critical minerals. The duties are expected to take effect on August 19.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Ottawa is ready to respond to the new American duties but will not take any steps until they come into force.
