Earthquake in Japan: prime minister reports 13 deaths

At least 13 people may have become victims of the earthquake in Japan, which led to extensive damage, including damage to roads and the collapse of buildings.

As stated by the country's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, all services are fighting to save people awaiting assistance.

"As of 08:30, the death of 13 people has been confirmed, the cause of death of which, presumably, were the consequences of the earthquake," she said. "In addition, people were injured, extensive damage was caused, including in the form of building collapses, fires, damage to houses," the head of government added.

"[Some] people are still waiting for help, and this is a race against time. We are mobilizing all our resources on the ground to save as many lives as possible," she said, noting that hot weather has set in in the affected areas. The air temperature in Kumamoto Prefecture reaches 32 degrees.
