Yerevan does not consider Iranian gas as an alternative to Russian, Armenian Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan told journalists.

The official was asked about the agreements reached during the recent visit to Iran. Tehran had previously offered Yerevan a project to expand gas supplies.

According to Khudatyan, Iran has needs for even larger supplies of electricity from Armenia, and within the framework of the "gas in exchange for electricity" formula, both countries intend to expand cooperation.

To the question of whether the Armenian side is seeking an alternative to Russian gas, fearing an increase in prices for "blue fuel" from Russia, the minister answered in the negative.

"There is no concern. There is a working process (with Iran – ed.), and within this process we have been developing cooperation for many years. We saw the potential for expansion, and now we have agreed to increase the scale," he assured.

It is noted that more than 400 million cubic meters of gas are supplied annually from Iran to Armenia (477 million in 2025) for the operation of a number of Armenian thermal power plants. Gas for other consumers in Armenia comes from Russia in the amount of more than 2.2 billion cubic meters per year (2 billion 230 million in 2025).
