Armenia introduces ban on tomato paste imports from EAEU countries

Armenia has introduced a temporary ban on the import of tomato paste.

The corresponding decision was adopted on July 30 at a government session.

The measure will be in effect for six months. The ban also applies to the transportation of the specified products from the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union.

It is noted that the decision is driven by the need to ensure equal competitive conditions for economic operators importing tomato paste and producers of tomato paste made from local raw materials, as well as to regulate the tomato procurement process.

It is indicated that, due to the restrictions imposed on the export and transit of quarantine products of Armenian origin, the volumes of fruit and vegetable exports, including greenhouse tomatoes, have declined, as a result of which a significant portion of the greenhouse tomatoes intended for export is currently being sold on the local market, which leads to a decrease in demand for tomatoes grown in open fields.

It is expected that as a result of the decision, sales volumes of locally produced tomato paste will increase and demand for tomatoes will grow, which will ensure the purchase of the tomatoes that have been grown.
