Legendary former Milan and Italy national team player Franco Baresi has died

World champion with the Italian national team and three-time Champions League winner Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66, the press service of the football club Milan reports.

According to media reports, the former Milan captain had recently been battling a serious illness.

The condolences that Milan extends to the entire family of Franco Baresi are shared by every Rossoneri fan in this difficult hour, — the club's statement says.

Baresi played for Milan from 1978 to 1997. With the club, the Italian defender won the Italian championship six times, claimed the Italian Super Cup four times, and also won the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup three times each.

With the Italian national team, Baresi won the 1982 World Cup, took silver at the 1994 World Cup, and bronze at the 1990 World Cup and Euro 1988.
